Day of the Birds
Thursday March 21, 2024 9:00am - 10:00am MDT

The day kicks off with a bird outing & presentation at Leola Marsh from Ashly Steinke, a member of Audubon. If you are interested in joining the outing, plan on meeting at Visit Rome’s Visitor Center (1146 County Road D Nekoosa, WI 54457) around 9:45 AM. The group will then leave our Visitor Center at 10:00 AM to head to Leola Marsh for an hour guided walk and presentation about prairie chickens, grassland bird habitat, & insects! Bring your binoculars, some water, dress for the weather, and wear shoes for some light walking. Coffee & donuts available for free before the outing!
At 12:30 PM (at the Visit Rome Visitor Center), we'll have members of Raptor Education Group, Inc. (REGI) give a fun 45-minute educational prestation along with 4-5 live Avian Ambassadors. Get up close and meet some raptors! This event is great for ALL ages. It is to be determined what raptors will be visiting but it could be anything from an owl, to a hawk, to an eagle, and so on.
Following the REGI presentation from 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM we will be hosting a Kid’s “Wild Bee Hotel” building activity at Visit Rome’s Visitors Center. Any age is welcome to join! We will encourage kids to make a colorful shelter for the bees they can hang in their trees at home! There will also be a Bird & Insects Scavenger Hunt families can take home! Snacks and drinks will be available for free during the REGI presentation and the “Wild Bee Hotel” activity.

We will be releasing more information on this year’s World Migratory Bird Day message and how you can help the birds! Stay tuned!

Birds, hormones, and extraordinary behavior: The story of the tiny but mighty golden-collared manakin of Panama
This book is the story of a remarkable bird, the golden-collared manakin (Manacus vitellinus) of Panama. Males of this species perform one of the most elaborate, physically complex, and noisy courtship displays of any animal on the planet. Barney A. Schlinger delves into the specialized neurons, muscles, bones, and hormonal systems underlying the manakin’s unique courtship behavior, creating a rich life-history account that integrates field observations and evolutionary biology with behavioral ecology, anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and general ornithology.

Spring Migration Celebration
Friday May 3, 2024 9:00am - Saturday May 4, 2024 5:00pm MDT
TBA
Join us for a weekend of celebrating Spring Migration at Bosque del Apache and learn about the amazing species that are spending the season with us! Holly Merker and Alex Harper will be returning to guide in-person, birding identification field trips. We will also have a keynote speaker, Gina Dello Russo, talking about the imporance of water at Bosque del Apache.

Holly Merker Holly has a background in art therapy, but today employs nature and birds to achieve the same result of mental, physical, and emotional wellness in her work as a Mindful Birding leader and certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide (ANFT).

Holly has paired her professional backgrounds in art therapy and over twenty years of bird guiding and environmental education, with coursework in MBSR, and the practice of Forest Bathing, to provide rich sensory experiences through nature-based wellness programs. Holly’s gently guided experiences incorporate accessibility for all mobility and skill levels and are designed to be welcoming and inclusive to all people.

Alex Harper
Alex Harper is a field biologist, birding guide, and outdoor educator based in Las Vegas, Nevada. Originally from Miami and South Florida, his deep interest in nature began early in childhood. He gravitated towards birds and reptiles in particular, and his parents fostered his interests by taking him to biologically rich habitats like the Florida Keys and Everglades.
Today Alex is more permanently settled in Las Vegas where he helps to operate a bird guiding business, serves as an outreach coordinator and educator for Red Rock Audubon, and conducts occasional bird surveys in the Mojave Desert. He serves on the board of directors for the Audubon chapter, sits on a board that advises county officials on wildlife policy in southern Nevada and is a voting member of the Nevada Birds Record Committee.
Gina Dello Russo As a riparian ecologist, Gina has been building regional interest in and capacity for addressing Rio Grande ecosystem restoration and long term health for the last thirty years. She is from a farming family of the Socorro valley, New Mexico. She worked as a physical sciences technician including work in groundwater and surface water hydrology and contaminants for 15 years before getting a BS in Biology from UNM.
She worked with the federal government for 27 years, most of that as Refuge Ecologist at Bosque del Apache NWR, where she focused on landscape scale ecosystem restoration on and off the refuge.

Migration Magic
Friday with Holly Merker

Saturday with Alex Harper
6:30 am – 9:00 am
These field trips will focus on seeking out what birds have dropped in for a refuel and recharge. This trip will guide participants around the refuge to seek out birds in various habitats, will include a focus on songbirds, and will also highlight any lingering waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds, gulls, and more!

Learning the Language of Birds
Friday with Alex Harper
Saturday with Holly Merker
6:30 am – 9:00 am
This workshop spends time indoors and outdoors, with the idea that for some of the experience, we’ll put into practice some of what we learn by listening to the birds around Bosque del Apache. Alex and Holly will share personal tips and offer hands-on techniques for learning some basics of the language of birds, all of which you can take with you and apply wherever your birding journeys take you.

Celebrating Songbirds
Friday with Alex Harper
9:30 am – 12 noon
Want to learn some tips to help you identify those active songbirds that keep you guessing? And also get to know these birds on a deeper level? This field trip will not only focus on identification tips for songbirds you may encounter in and around the refuge, but also provide you with tools to take on your birding adventures wherever life takes you. The trip will be at a comfortably slow pace that is suitable for all mobility levels.

Every Bird Counts

Friday with Holly Merker – One time only
9:30 am – 12 noon
Want to learn to do something that’s not only fun, rewarding, and good for you, but also good for the birds and planet? In this workshop, we’ll learn how to use some popular apps for birding and observation – eBird, Merlin, iNaturalist, and more—and how they contribute to the greater good of conservation. In addition, we’ll focus on why every bird is important, and we’ll spotlight some of the refuge’s unique birdlife as we spend the morning birding with an emphasis on paying forward to bird conservation.

Keynote – A call to action
You can truly make a difference!

Gina Dello Russo, local advocate for the Rio Grande
Saturday – One time only | 11:30 am – 12:30 noon
It is an exciting time for all to be engaged in discussions on our shared water future. There are opportunities coming up for the Friends to meet other stakeholders in the Middle Rio Grande. Through shared learning and advocacy, we can assure that the natural environment along the Rio Grande, including the jewels of the national and state refuges, are protected and have the capacity to thrive in the future.
Let’s start with some of the facts of where we are today, waterwise. I will give a short overview of the available science that will inform how we move into our water future. Then I hope to interest the Friends in the many ways they can become involved in local and regional discussions and actions to assure that our shared voices are heard, and our concerns are addressed.

Desert Arboretum Stroll
Saturday – One time only | 12 noon – 2:00 pm
After the Friends  Annual meeting, we hope you’ll stay to explore the desert blooms at our Annual Desert Arboretum Stroll!  This FREE “drop-in” style event allows visitors to experience the beauty of spring in the Chihuahuan desert while strolling through the arboretum.  Knowledgeable volunteers will be available to answer questions about the cacti, native plants, water-wise landscaping, and even the critters who call the arboretum home.  Throughout the accessible trail, many of the cacti will be in bloom and native pollinators will be hard at work. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to view the garden at its finest!

Youth Birding Adventure
Saturday

Two concurrent sessions: ages 5 -12* and ages 13 – 17
1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Know any kids or teens who love nature and want to learn more about birds?
This special event is designed especially for them.
Together we’ll share the wonders of the birds of Bosque del Apache, as we tune into the feathered friends around us through fun and engaging exercises in observation! No experience with birdwatching is necessary. If you have binoculars, feel free to bring them. *Attendees under 13 must be accompanied by one adult

Birding 101

Roseburg Fall Migratory Bird Day
Friday September 6, 2024 12:00am - 12:00am MDT

Roseburg Swift Watch & World, Fall Migratory Bird Celebration 2024

September 6th, 13th & 20th | 6:30pm – 8pm @ The Clay Place (Fir Grove Park)

Update: Two years ago, the Swifts abandoned the Clay Place Chimney and opted to use a chimney at the Courthouse as their primary fall migration roost. Last year, they were back at the Clay Place; ditto last spring AND for a few days this fall. Then, they quit using the Clay Place chimney, but can still be seen around sunset in the sky and roosting in small numbers in a couple of residential chimneys.

Umpqua Valley Migratory Bird Celebration: Vaux’s Swifts are just one of many amazing bird species that pass through our area in the spring and fall in migration. Federal and State agencies will be joining us to celebrate fall bird migration in conjunction with Swift Watch in recognition of World Migratory Bird Day which brings attention to one of the most important and spectacular events in the Americas – bird migration. Information about migration and bird related activities for kids will be offered. Plus, we may have as special guests a trio of Cedar Waxwings who are ambassadors for all migratory species.

Music: The "Swifts Sisters and Friends" will host an open jam session featuring Americana music beginning around 6:30. Bring your instrument/voice and join in the fun.

Weather Advisory: This Friday is scheduled to be a very warm day. Please bring water and other items to keep yourselves comfortable during this warm evening!

This event is a partnership of Umpqua Valley Audubon Society and the City of Roseburg Parks & Recreation.

Ilhabela e as aves migratórias
Monday October 7, 2024 12:00am - 12:00am MDT
TBA

Garrett Williamson: 395 Bishop Hollow Rd Newtown Square, PA 19073

Co-sponsored by Bird Town PA, Newtown Square, Newtown Township EAC, Garrett Williamson, and CRC Watersheds, accomplished birders Phil Witmer and Mike McGraw will guide us through the beautiful 240-acre Garrett Williamson property during the peak of fall bird migration. We anticipate seeing flocks of warblers, vireos, and thrushes streaming through the woods and fields on their way back to their winter homes in Central and South America and the Caribbean islands.

The Garrett Williamson property has trails meandering through open fields and meadows, riparian areas featuring a tributary to Crum Creek, and primarily beech tree dominant forest. There are many diverse habitats and edges because the property is farmed, and they have an educational garden which is visited regularly by birds. The property is private and generally closed to the public so this would be a unique opportunity to visit this large piece of mostly undeveloped land in Newtown Square.

Event is not recommended for younger children. Register now! Birding events at Garrett Williamson tend to fill up early.

Our Guides:
Phil Witmer is an avid birder and conservationist with over 40 years birding experience. He is a past board member of Bucks County Audubon Society, past president of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club, one of the oldest birding clubs in the country, and was a member on the advisory board of Audubon Pennsylvania State Office. He is currently vice-president of Bird Town Pennsylvania helping to build bird friendly habitats in Pennsylvania municipalities and associate member of the Tredyffrin Township EAC. He has devoted much time to the conservation of birds, the forces driving their decline and what we need to do to save them. He leads bird walks with a conservation focus and lectures on a variety of related topics. He teaches a course on backyard birding through the Main Line School Night.

Michael McGraw is a Wildlife Biologist and Ecologist. Since 2002, Michael has performed an extensive variety of reptile, amphibian, and avifaunal surveys in the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. with a strong emphasis on endangered, threatened, and species of concern. Beyond survey and research, his work as a consulting scientist includes project design, permitting, project management, and client relations, as well as writing technical reports and proposals. Michael is currently managing numerous projects and functioning as a lead biologist on a variety of RES projects, including wildlife surveys, ecological assessments, threatened and endangered species surveys, population biology research, wetland mitigation, sensitive habitat restoration, FAA-mandated wildlife hazard management plans for airports, land management and site master planning, and energy development projects.

Stop by the Edmonton Valley Zoo for a celebration of World Migratory Bird Day on October 12th, 2024. Stittsville Wetlands Community Group to receive funding from the Rotary Club of Ottawa-Stittsville
Saturday October 12, 2024 12:00am - 12:00am MDT
TBA
The Rotary Club of Ottawa-Stittsville will present a cheque to the Friends of Stittsville Wetlands (FoSW) on Saturday, October 12, 2024 – World Migratory Bird Day. This cheque presentation is being made to support the FoSW's work in protecting, restoring, regenerating, and rewilding our wetlands.

The Goulbourn Wetland Complex, a provincially significant wetland, on the doorstep of Stittsville, provides a home to over 150 species of birds (eBird), including the American Kestrel – the smallest falcon in North America, the Wood Duck – one of the most colorful North American waterfowl and Species at Risk, such as the Barn Swallow and the Eastern Whip-poor Will.

Participants will gather at the TransCanada Trailhead at the intersection of Westridge Drive and Abbott Street West on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 10:45 AM to walk together to the lookout over the Goulbourn Wetland Complex, at the headwaters of Poole Creek. The cheque presentation will be made upon our arrival at approximately 11 AM.

The FoSW became incorporated on January 1, 2024. Since the inception of the organization, the FoSW have built an enviable network of partners – non-governmental conservation organizations – at the national, provincial, and local levels who have been and continue to be instrumental in advancing their mission.

The Friends of Stittsville Wetlands are a member of the Nature Network, a federated member group of about 155 member groups across Ontario under the auspices of Ontario Nature.

Sunday November 3, 2024 12:00am - 12:00am MDT
TBA
The Belize Urban Bird Watch is a bird watching expedition throughout the country. These expeditions take place across the country in order to raise awareness to the gentle ecosystem that tropical birds live in and emphasize the need to protect them. During this event we share information in issues that are affecting birds and how individuals can help. This year we are including the message of birds and insects, as there are many factors that are equally as important, due to interconnectedness within the wider ecosystem. We will be inviting several stakeholders to explore the Urban areas and find our feathered friends that make the urban areas their home and promote the theme for this year World Migratory Birds Day "Protect Insects, Protect Birds"
